Overview
The Home Island is the island where you build on. It is the only location on the World Map where you can build things.

At the start of a new game, the player has 7+ maps to choose from; each with it's own difficulty level, starting resources, land area and terrain types.

Additionally, the player can choose various difficulty options, or just select a default difficulty (Sailor/Captain/Admiral).

Maps
Currently there are 8 island maps. They have multiple start points, with varying difficulty:
New Haven
This is the easiest map, recommended for new players. (Difficulty level: Easy/Medium/Hard)

A mostly flat map, with an wide open starting area and all necessary starting resources close nearby.

Shattered Isles
A map with many individual islands that need to be connected to form a single industrial system. (Difficulty level: Easy)

The largest map in the game.

Dragontail Isle
A map meant to show of the utility of the new train system. (Difficulty level: Easy/Hard/Insane)

You're going to be using trains. A lot.

Armageddon
A map with a distinctive crater in the middle. (Difficulty level: Easy/Medium/Hard/Insane)

If you can get down the crater, you can get plenty of uranium and titanium.

Beach
This map is for advanced players. (Difficulty level: Easy/Medium/Hard)

A fairly flat map, but with starting area in a desert and most of the island's shores blocked by mountains. Has a second, smaller island.

Curland
This map is for advanced players. (Difficulty level: Easy/Hard/Insane)

A fairly flat map, but shaped as a C-shaped atoll.

The Golden Peak
This map is for advanced players looking for additional challenges. (Difficulty level: Medium/Hard/Insane)

A mountainous map, with a steep mountain at it's center.

You Shall Not Pass
This map is for expert players. (Difficulty level: Hard)

A map which is mostly a plateau, with the exception of the starting area. Starting area has limited resources.

Crater
Supporter Edition only. (Difficulty level: $10 USD)

It's a big crater I guess? With most of the map underwater, messing up means starting over. Or just loading a save.

Insula Mortis
This map was for advanced players looking for additional challenges. (Difficulty level: Time Travel)

A Jolly Roger-shaped map, with multiple separated landmasses. It's no longer in the game.

Community Maps
You can use a custom map. (Difficulty level: Varies)

Microchips are a complex, late game item made in the Microchip Machine or its upgrade. While not being used for any buildings in themselves, they are an ingredient in making [[Electronics III], which in turn are used for many important late-game items such as Lab Equipment IV and Maintenance III

Microchips are notable for having a lengthy production chain of 12 intermediate products, beginning with Silicon Wafer<nowiki/>s and ending with Microchips Stage 4 B, which are used to craft microchips themselves. Each stage is built in the microchip machine using the preceding stage and a small amount of Water and Acid, Copper and Plastic, or Gold, in that order, and repeating for four full rotations, for a total of 12 stages.

Each stage operates at the same rate, consuming and producing 6 (or 18 for the Microchip Machine II) of each microchip stage, while consuming 2 (or 6) of the intermediate product(s) added. The final stage is especially efficient, producing 12 (or 36) microchips.

The twelve stages, along with the items needed to craft them, are:
The World Map represents the world that the player can explore using , which uses Diesel. The world map is a map of nodes which represent your Home Island, , various mines or quarries, , a , , Locations With Enemies, Locations With Loot, or Damaged Cargo Ships. When the ship encounters an enemy, it might get damaged. This then requires repairs, which consume resources such as Steel, Electronics, and Mechanical Parts. The player is limited in exploration by the capabilities of their ship. As the player researches new technologies, they are able to improve the ships battle score, engine, fuel reserves and radar range. This then allows the ship to explore areas occupied by stronger enemies, and areas which the ship did not have enough fuel to travel to.

The world map structure is fixed, however the nodes on the map are placed randomly based on your map seed.
Exploration
At the beginning of every game, there are several locations already available on the :
* The Home Island, displayed as a yellow icon with three houses, from which the game begins.

* A next to your Home Island for easy early game trade once you've gained access to trading through research, repairs and infrastructure.

* Several Unknown Locations, displayed as grey question marks, which can be explored with once it is repaired.

Discovering locations:
Locations can be discovered in two ways:

* In the early game, it is only possible to discover an Unknown Location by ordering the ship to travel there and explore it. Once explored, the location will be discovered, and any further connecting nodes will be revealed as an Unknown Location, GRAY.

* After upgrading the Ship's bridge, locations can be discovered by visiting the node on the map directly preceding the new location. Connecting nodes will be revealed with their original icon, coloured either RED or GREEN, if there is an enemy present or not.

Exploring locations:
Locations can be Explored by visiting them with :
Unexplored locations fall into two categories:

# A Location With Enemy with a RED map icon. (It must be defeated for the location to be Explored.)
# An Unknown Location with a GREEN map icon.

World Map locations by type:
Unknown Locations
Unknown Locations are locations not yet explored by The Ship, they can have two coloure:
* GRAY icon. A discovered, but not yet revealed location.
* GREEN icon. A or a Damaged Cargo Ship waiting to be explored.

Locations With Loot
Locations With Loot are actually called "Location With Enemy" ingame, although the icon is a Treasure chest.
* RED icon. Upon defeating this location it will turn into a Fully Explored(BLUE) location.

Villages
* YELLOW icon. Waiting To be traded with. Actually called "Settlement" ingame.

* BLUE icon. It used to be either a Damaged Cargo Ship, a Location With Loot or a simple Location With Enemy (with a skull map icon).

Each Home Island contains varying amounts of natural resources. The amount of resources mined by Excavators is modified by the ore mining yield modifier on the Game Difficulty screen. On the other hand, the amount of Crude Oil (and maybe Water?) is modified by the Extra Starting Materials modifier on the Game Difficulty screen. Any modifier cannot be changed once the island has been founded.

All maps have been updated for U3/0.7 (larger, with added Bauxite, and Uranium Ore deposits), with the addition of Dragontail Isle, and removal of Insula Mortis. Armageddon was also added in an earlier update.
The Crater map is exclusive to the Supporter Edition.
</div>All numbers in the table are in units of millions (1=1,000,000). Note that only Dragontail Isle and Curland have ocean oil deposits.

It should be noted that most of the above natural resources are non-renewable. But there are alternative ways to get unlimited resources.
* Dirt can be created by dumping onto the ground or mixing and Gravel.
* Wood is infinite, since Trees can be planted with Tree Planters.
** This also means Coal is as well, since it can be made from Wood with a Coal Maker.
* Water can be indefinitely collected by 3 different ways:
** Rain can also be collected directly with the use of a Rainwater Harvester.
** Rain replenishes the Natural Groundwater reservoir (which can be pumped with a Groundwater Pump).
** Seawater can be pumped limitlessly from the sea with a Seawater Pump(Tall) and turned into Water through desalination.
* Crude Oil consumption can potentially be avoided in the mid-game using the Biodiesel technology for Diesel and Naphtha Reforming for Naphtha.
** Additionally, the player can switch over to Hydrogen usage for vehicles.
* Quartz is effectively crystallized Sand, and can be turned into it by processing it in a Crusher twice, prolonging the time to run out, while potentially saving your nice looking beaches.
** , made from Rock via Gravel, can substitute for sand in Concrete Slab and Filter Media production, also saving sand.
* All other resources can be imported infinitely from Outposts or by Contracts, or dropping an endgame asteroid.
