Retaining wall can be built with different levels of submersion to the ground.
Retaining walls, as other buildings, will start to take damage as it's foundation tile is reaches below the red-marked bottom area of the wall or when the materials, dumped upon its top, rise the ground level above its top level.

It is advised to place Retaining Walls exactly on the center of a excavating/dumping tile border, as otherwise excavators will be able to dig "through" the wall and trucks dump "over" it.

Retaining Walls is a structure that prevents the falling of already existing or dumped Loose products while the tile behind it is excavated or dumped on.

It exists in 5 variants with with different footprints: (1x2, 2x2 and 2x4):

Retaining wall can be built with different levels of submersion to the ground. On perfectly flat ground theres 6 different levels of submersion, on steep slopes there can be none.

Retaining walls, as other buildings (with the exception of pipes?), will start to take damage as any of it's 8 foundation tiles is lowered below the bottom or risen above top of its 3D model.

Retaining Wall (Long) is exactly the length of a mining/dumping tile, which is 4x4.

Using the "toggle_terrain_designations_over_entities" console command will allow the user place mining / dumping designation onto the same tile as the retaining wall. A demonstration of this can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtdFC6bjJ98&t=943s
