Air Pollution is a virtual pollutant in the game that reduces population Health. It’s produced by industrial buildings like the Smoke Stack, Smoke Stack (Large), Flare, Burner (Solid), and Exhaust Scrubber, as well as diesel-powered vehicles.
Sources
- Industrial Buildings:
- Smoke Stack and Smoke Stack (Large): Release exhaust directly as air pollution.
- Flare: Burns off excess gases, producing air pollution.
- Burner (Solid): Generates 0.5 units of air pollution per unit of Waste burned.
- Exhaust Scrubber: Converts 180 units of Exhaust into 24 units of air pollution (0.133 units per exhaust).
- Vehicles: Diesel-powered vehicles (e.g., trucks) emit 1 unit of air pollution per unit of diesel fuel consumed. Hydrogen-powered vehicles produce none.
Health Effects
- Penalty per Unit: Each unit of air pollution reduces Health by 0.044 points.
- Averaging Period: The penalty is based on the average pollution over the last 4 months.
- Maximum Penalty: Capped at -40 Health.
- Examples:
- 23 units per month ≈ -1 Health (23 × 0.044 ≈ 1.01).
- 100 units per month = -4.4 Health (100 × 0.044).
- 910 units per month = -40 Health (maximum penalty).
Comparison
Air pollution is less harmful per unit than water pollution (-0.044 Health vs. -0.11 Health), making it about 2.5 times weaker in its impact.
Management Tips
- Switch to hydrogen-powered vehicles to eliminate vehicle-related air pollution.
- Upgrade to the Incineration Plant from the Burner (Solid) for more efficient waste disposal with less pollution.
- Minimize Exhaust output where possible, though some air pollution from Exhaust Scrubbers is unavoidable in sustainable setups.
