Compost is a loose product generated by the processing of Food from a Farm or Sludge from a Wastewater Treatment machine.

Compost's primary usage is to boost the food production by increasing fertility: it serves as the ingredient for Fertilizer, and it can be dumped to create fertile soil that Farms can be built upon. Dumped Compost turns into Dirt.

Note that the loop

Compost -> Fertilizer (Organic) -> Greenhouse -> Animal Feed -> Compost

is generally not worth the trouble. While it is very slightly positive in terms of the main products - assuming the crop is Wheat or Corn - this is at the expense of dirt, a large amount of water for irrigation, and the workers and power to run the chain. You are usually better off not making extra Compost from crops.
