Iron is one of the first crafted materials the player will create in the game. It is a required material in the production of Construction Parts and Mechanical Parts, making it one of the highest-demand items in the early stage of the game. But, from the mid-stage, the demand for iron is almost entirely replaced by Steel. Keep in mind that while the Steel Mechanical Parts recipe is more Iron Ore efficient, the Construction Parts one is less so.

Iron is also directly required as construction material for the Small Excavator, Tree Harvester, and Retaining Wall. It is also use in upgrading and repairing The Ship before being upgraded enough to require Steel.

Note that the devs have stated they wish to entirely replace it with Steel in the future, so don't be surprised if it's removed from the game.
