Bauxite is a natural resource obtained through mining. It has a complicated processing chain that results in it eventually being used for Aluminum, 
Electronics IV and 
Titanium Alloy, which are then used for other high-end materials including 
Consumer Electronics and everything space related.
That said, you can probably skip it until you get to the lategame and want to do space stuff.
